Architecture design doesn’t stop once you’ve modelled your as-is state. It’s a collaborative and iterative process. New ideas are proposed, discussed, approved, and then reviewed. Decisions need to be tracked for context and learning.

Today, we’re excited to announce the next version of Drafts. These updates introduce several improvements and fundamental changes to the Drafts experience, such as model-based drafting.

What’s new? ✨

See all your drafts in the new Drafts tab. Here, you’ll be able to:

Model-based (multi-diagram) drafts

Diagrams change list

Drafts are now model-based, meaning you can combine multiple diagrams and model changes in a draft. Edits on model objects, connections, and diagrams (including layout edits) are treated as draft changes. Changes in a draft will default to future state.

Edited diagrams are automatically added to the Diagrams change list at the top left of the navigation. Find and edit a specific diagram by going to View all diagrams.

Review changes

Draft changes

View the changes in the draft from the Changes button on the top right. You can view details by clicking on individual change items.

See all model object changes in the draft under the new Model tab.

Merge changes

Merge modal

Merge your draft when you agree to the proposed changes. A modal will appear with a list of changes and who proposed them.

A draft that’s been worked on for a while may have drifted from the current (’main’) version. You can ‘pull’ or sync changes from the current version.

Last thing. In any diagram, you can click on the Draft dropdown to view drafts the diagram is in, or create a new draft.

Note: Drafts are unlimited on the Growth and Scale plan. Free plan is limited to 1 active draft.

Why did we ship this? 🤔

These changes are a step forward in our vision to help architects and technical teams design for the future. Create a draft to ideate on future states of your architecture, align on changes with your team, and merge them back into the current state. Merged changes can be referenced at any time, acting as a decision record for teams.
